PERCEIVED IMPACT OF MARTIAL LAW IN A PHILIPPINE ISLAND AS PERCEIVED BY ITS RESIDENTS

Completed2019

Abstract

This study aimed to give an overview on the impact of the declaration of martial law by President Rodrigo Duterte on May 23, 2017. This quantitative descriptive type of research utilized the questionnaire as data gathering tool. One hundred residents were randomly chosen from Mindanao specifically in Marawi City for the study. Gathered data showed that martial law is perceived to have a positive impact on the residents of Marawi City as it contributes to the peace and order of the area. However, one of the affected areas is the tourism in Mindanao. Based on the study, there are few tourists that come to explore Mindanao because of the martial law. The tourism industry should therefore be strengthened in Marawi City by creating more promotional publications such as flyers, signage or even advertisement showcasing the beauty and security of Marawi City and Mindanao. Furthermore, it is suggested that the Maranaos should be continuously educated regarding martial law through seminars.
