The Potential of Honey in Wound Healing: A Review

Completed2021

Abstract

Honey has been known for its medical benefits for years. Its healing property can be attributed to its composition which makes it effective to treat infections and promote wound healing. The goal of this study was to collect and synthesize existing reviews of scientific studies in order to form a comprehensive understanding of the current evidence that can guide future interventions and research in the field. A review of literature and studies about the potential abilities of honey in treating infections and promoting wound healing was done utilizing databases and electronic journal collections from 2011-to 2021. Reviews focused on the medical benefits of honey to humans, the composition of honey, and the antibacterial properties of manuka honey and stingless bees in treating infections. The review indicates that both the European Bee Honey and Stingless bee honey play an important role as a therapeutic agent in a variety of health issues, particularly in the treatment of infection and the promotion of wound healing. Based on the presented studies, it can be concluded that honey may have therapeutic potential as an alternative antibacterial agent in the medical setting. Due to some limitations of this research, it is recommended that other research be done and utilize more rigorous study designs such as a systematic review.
