ANTIMICROBIAL PROPERTY OF TOPICAL PROBIOTICS ON SKIN ACNE: A NEW PERSPECTIVE ON MICROBIOTA
Area of Research
Abstract
This research investigated the antimicrobial property of the topical probiotics
on skin acne as a new perspective on microbiome. Using experimental method of
research, the study was conducted to observe the effectiveness of probiotics against
Staphylococcus aureus which is known to cause different skin disorders such as the
acne. Different probiotic products were used as topical agents against
Staphylococcus aureus to assess their effectiveness against the prevention of
inhibition of Staphylococcus aureus and its effectiveness as a topical treatment. Data
were gathered through observations and microscopic analysis of the effect of
probiotic products on Staphylococcus aureus. A self-devised checklist in the form of
rubrics with qualitative descriptions was the basis of the observation.
Results revealed Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus is resistant to
probiotics. However, the measurement of zone of inhibition specifically for Sample Y
shows that it has antimicrobial property making it a promising topical agent for skin
disorder. Further studies should be conducted to document the probiotic capacity to
benefit the skin and support the assumption that probiotics can be effective as
topical agent for skin acne.
