Motivation in Crime Commission: A Study on Gender Differences

Completed2021

Abstract

The relation between gender and criminality is strong, most likely to remain so. Women have traditionally been much less likely to commit violent crimes compared to men, and that pattern is still evident until today. Rates of female involvement in some forms of property crime-notably petty theft and fraud appear to be in increasing rate. However, while there is a relative significant increase in women’s property crime involvement, female participation in these crimes remains far less than that of men. This aim of this study is to consider the relationship between male and female gender and how it affects crime commission. Descriptive method was used to identify motives/ motivations in crime commission. Questionnaires were handed over to the target population to achieve the goal. It is therefore concluded that poverty plays an important role in crime commission by both genders. Males are stereotyped most likely to commit crime compared to females. They are said to be patriarchal, and as head of the household, they are expected to shoulder more of what the family needs. Females especially mother’s usually commit crime when the father doesn’t bring in much of what the family needs. They are traditionally much less likely to commit violent crimes. Poverty is one of the factors affecting crime commission by both gender. Lack of education is an important factor that is needed to be addressed. It is recommended that the government reinforce its free education. With ample and proper education, skills are gained and there are equal job opportunities for both genders. Also, attending workshops and government sponsored financing can generate jobs not only for females. Output of the research is solely through internet due to the pandemic which limit our capacity to access journals and books in the library.
