Awareness of the Seafarers on their Mental Health while On-board

Abstract
The research focused on the awareness of the seafarers on their mental health while on-board. The researcher used a quantitative-descriptive method. A three (3) part structured type of questionnaire. The first part determined the present condition of the seafarers in terms of their mental health. The second part examined the factors affecting the condition of the seafarers and the last part investigated the strategies used in improving mental health. Respondents of the research are limited to selected seafarers on-board who work on engine and deck. The researcher made use of random sampling upon choosing the respondents. Results reveal that the present condition of the seafarer in terms of their mental health, factors affecting their condition, and strategies to improve seafarers’ on-board mental health. Seafarers are much aware of their mental health status and what are the things and situations that they may encounter determined by the questionnaire given. Nonetheless, seafarers are experiencing problems while on-board affecting factors such as but not limited to depression due to nature of work, extensive contract of duty, anxiety towards the family relationship, physical abuse in training, and conflict against co-workers or there is no equanimity at all resulting to seafarers to have serious mental health problems that may lead to suicide. There is a significant relationship as evaluated between awareness of the seafarers about their mental health and the problems that they are experiencing while on-board.
