Level of Competence and Work Performance of the Maritime Students in the Flexible Learning

Abstract

Studying is the most crucial part for the students to learn and to have access to a better future because without complying with the required 3 years academic requirements maritime students cannot join a cadetship program which is required for them to be a certified licensed seafarer. This study aimed to assess the level of competence and work performance of maritime students with this new type of learning. It utilized the quantitativedescriptive method of research. The locale of this study was in Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation (MSEUF) under the department of College of Maritime Education (CME). The respondents of the study were 100 maritime students who were enrolled in Manuel S Enverga University Foundation (MSEUF). The researchers conducted a two (2) part structured type questionnaire. The first part is to determine the level of competence of the Maritime students who are currently enrolled in this school year. The second part is to investigate the academic performance of the Maritime students. The research instrument was in a google form to avoid direct contact with the respondents and observe MANUEL S. Results show flexible learning briefly introduced the background of competence-based to the maritime students which are connected to the real shipping practice and may be referred to as standard or performance-based. It introduced the fast development of the emerging technologies in terms of training and assessment set out in section A-I/6 of the STCW Code, which states that each party shall ensure that all Training & Assessment of seafarers for the certification under the convention is structured following written programs including such methods and media of delivery, procedures and course material as are necessary to achieve the prescribed standard of competence and conducted, monitored, evaluated and supported by persons qualified for conducting training and assessment
