Problems Encountered by Filipino Seafarers Working in International Vessels

There are many problems that Filipino seafarers are encountered while working in an international vessel that will affect their performance on board. This study determined the problems that most Filipino seafarers encountered while working in international vessels, common situations that Filipino seafarers mostly encountered problems, and address most factors that affect their performance working in an international vessel. This study utilized the quantitative-descriptive method of research. A purposive sampling method was used by the researcher. The locale of this study was in Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation (MSEUF) under the department of College of Maritime Education (CME), where most of the maritime students that they produce are well competent and employed in the international maritime industry. The respondents of the study were 100 Filipino seafarers who worked in an international vessel and also those Filipino seafarers who are still working in international vessels. The researchers used a three (3) part structure type questionnaire. The first part is to investigate common situations where the seafarers mostly encountered problems. The second part is to determine the solutions applied by the seafarers and the last part is to know the effects of the problem on young seafarers. The research instrument was in a google form to avoid direct contact with the respondents and observe the health protocols. The researchers used a quantitative-descriptive method of research and a three (3) part structured type questionnaire. Results show that most of the respondents agree that homesickness is the most common problem that one can experience while onboard an international vessel. Most of the respondents also agree that maintaining a positive attitude is the key to overcome the problems. Most respondents have experienced less favorable than those who have experience.
