Effectiveness of the Simulation Environment in the Preparation of Maritime Students for On-board Ship Safety
Area of Research
Abstract
Simulation in maritime education mimics the real-world environment. It makes the learner feel at home. They can practice without any fear of causing actual damage. However, there is a posing challenge to maritime students when it comes to being ready for safety and security challenges on-board ship because no matter how accurate the learning simulation. There is always some scope for error and doubts when it comes to the re-creation of real-life scenarios. Real-life situations can present an unlimited number of options and not all of them can be reproduced in learning simulations. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of the simulation environment in the preparation of maritime students for onboard ship safety. It utilized the quantitative-descriptive method of research. The locale of this study was in Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation (MSEUF) Lucena City, Quezon Province in the department College of Maritime Education (CME). The respondents of the study were 100 3rd year deck maritime students. In selecting the respondents of the study, a random sampling method was used by the researchers. Results show that students are not always competent in using simulators. The posing safety challenges for marine transportation are moderately serious. Hence, the higher the competency of the students in terms of using simulators, the lower the amount of posing safety challenges for marine transportation.
