Area of Research
Abstract
The study attempted to find out the effectiveness of integrative approach in teaching and learning traditional crafts in Philippine contemporary art. It employed a quantitative-descriptive method of research and made used a checklist questionnaire as the primary tool in data gathering through Google forms to in order to generate the needed data. The respondents or key informants were 35 Junior high school students and 35 teachers in private schools of Lucena City, selected through random sampling. Frequency and percentage distribution and Weighted Mean were used to treat the data statistically. Result of the study revealed that there are more female students in the Junior High Schools, which is an evidence of imbalance of genders in the student population. Most of the Junior High School students prefer the Arts and Design Strand as their area of specialization which indicate that the young generation learners have a strong inclination in the fields of Arts and design. Moreover, the Junior High School students considered the new learning competencies in traditional crafts as slightly important. In which case, the young learners still have to be convinced about the teaching strategies for them to develop an appreciation of the teaching of traditional and local crafts. On the other hand, the program on the integrative teaching and learning through arts proved to be an Effective program, therefore, the subject areas that include the traditional craft in Philippine contemporary arts are still popular strands among the Junior High School students. After careful analysis and consideration on the findings and conclusion drawn in this research study, the following are highly recommended: Encouragement of more male students to enroll in the field of Arts and Design strand to create a balance that would complement equally with the female students, through a more intensive career talks and marketing campaign, continuance and enrichment of the curriculum with arts and crafts contents as it proved to be Slightly Important, however, attention may be given to areas identified as Not Important such as: contrasting with other countries, recognizing local crafts and make local crafts out of natural materials, Enhancement of the Integrative learning and teaching of Arts and Design as the course program proved to be Not Important through information dissemination, marketing campaign to increase student enrolment and teacher professional development programs, adoption and implementation of the proposed Action Plan/Workshop on the Enhancement of teaching and learning on traditional crafts, both for the students and the teachers. It is also highly recommended for other researchers to conduct a more in depth studies on the same line to validate the result of this academic endeavor.
