Teaching Strategies of Grade 2 Teachers in Developing Cultural Awareness of Learners in Araling Panlipunan

Completed2021

Abstract

The country is known for being culturally diverse due to its archipelagic nature. With differences particularly in language and regional identity, a multicultural society is best served by a culturally responsive curriculum. However, questions rise as to how teachers find ways in ensuring cultural diversity in the subject without compromising the quality of learning and motivation of their students. This prompted the researcher to find out the strategies of Grade 2 teachers in developing cultural awareness of learners in Araling Panlipunan. The descriptive-quantitative study involved 30 randomly selected public-school teachers from 2 schools in San Francisco, 3rd District of Quezon. Data was gathered from both online and manual distribution of a self-made survey questionnaire intended to evaluate the teaching strategies they use as well as the problems they encounter in developing cultural awareness to their students. Results reported a demographic data of mostly 30 years old females, who have attained master’s degrees and are teaching for 1-10 years. Cooperative learning and the use of graphic organizers were among the teaching strategies they used. However, problems regarding access to online learning material, language barriers, and motivating students have been noted. These results served as a basis for a recommendation for teachers and future researchers as well as a foundation for a constructed lesson plan in Araling Panlipunan which addresses the problems encountered and matches the aforementioned teaching strategies in cultivating cultural awareness.
