Effectiveness of Word Problems in Teaching Grade 10 Mathematics

Abstract
This study analyzed the effectiveness of using word problems in teaching Grade 10 Mathematics through the use of a descriptive research design. Specifically, it aimed to describe the effectiveness of using word problems in teaching Grade 10 Mathematics as perceived by the students and teachers in the third congressional district of SDO Quezon; to determine the attitude of students towards the use of word problems in teaching Mathematics 10. This study made use of weighted arithmetic mean as the statistical treatment to aid in the analysis of the data.
Results revealed that the use of word problems is highly effective in terms of flexible knowledge, problem-solving, self-directed learning, collaborative learning, and intrinsic motivation. The students also have positive attitude towards mathematics and the use of word problems in teaching Mathematics 10. At the end of the study, lesson exemplars in teaching Mathematics 10 with the use of word problems were developed based on the significant findings of the study.
