UTILIZATION OF SCHEMA (SELF-CHECK EXERCISES IN MATHEMATICS ASSESSMENT) IN IMPROVING MATHEMATICAL SKILLS IN PROBABILITY AND STATISTICS OF GRADE 11 STUDENTS OF SELECTED SCHOOLS OF GUMACA DIOCESAN EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM (GUDES)
Area of Research
Abstract
The purpose of the research was to investigate and describe the effectiveness of SCHEMA (Self-Check Exercises in Mathematics Assessment) in improving Mathematical skills in Probability and Statistics of Grade 11 students of selected schools in Gumaca Diocesan Educational System (GUDES). It was quantitative in nature and used the experimental design to describe the skills in Mathematics of the learners that were chosen using purposive sampling. The researcher used pre-test and post-test to determine the effectiveness of SCHEMA in improving the Mathematical skills of the learners and T-test for independent samples to test the significant difference between the mean pre-test scores and mean post-test scores of each group. Weighted mean was utilized to measure the level of agreement of the students on the use of SCHEMA.The study revealed that the pre-test scores of the experimental group have the least deviation from the mean while the post-test scores of the control group have the most deviation from the mean score. Also, there is a slight difference between the scores of the experimental and control group on their pre-test but the experimental group has greater increase in score, from pre-test to post-test, than the control group. The p-value of experimental group was 0.004 which leads to the rejection of the null hypothesis stating that pre-test and post-test scores of the students in Probability and Statistics are not significantly different. Likewise, the controlled group leads to the rejection of the null hypothesis. Moreover, SCHEMA was “Highly Acceptable” based on the four criteria given by the researcher.
