Practices of Filipino Seafarers in Achieving the Work-Life Balance

Abstract

Seafaring is one of the most in-demand jobs nowadays. It is the occupation that is seen to generate income more advanced among others across countries. Moreover, the Philippines is one of those countries that develops and deploys seafarers all over the world. Indeed, the maritime industry contributes so much to the economy of the Philippines. Filipino seafarers furthermore are found to be more competitive and hardworking which makes them stand out from others. Despite however of the one –of a kind characteristic of the Filipino seafarers, they face challenges onboard which makes life complicated for reasons. This study focused on the practices observed by Filipino seafarers in achieving the work-life balance. Furthermore, the researcher used a descriptive method of research that made use of the data gathered through survey questionnaires. This involved Filipino seafarers with permanent residence in the Province of Quezon. The participants were identified through convenience random sampling. This sampling method is used moreover, due to health concerns during the pandemic. The questionnaire was in a google form and the link was sent through messenger since these people are possibly on-board during the conduct of the study. The study revealed that the respondents always observe respect among peers within the workplace. They are also able to develop self-esteem and they feel love and belongingness onboard. Timely promotion and recognition, as well as the support from the family meanwhile, was found to be the factor considered in achieving work-life balance. In addition, practices of the seafarers onboard highly mostly include discrimination preventive measures, enhancement of communication ability, getting in touch with family, and engagement to mental and physical activities as well. Finally, this study proposed a program to help better achieve work-life balance.
