Impact of Mental Health on the Academic Performance of Maritime Students

Abstract

This study discussed the impact of mental health on the academic performance of maritime students. The researchers investigated the mental health problems encountered by maritime students. They conducted an online survey through google forms. The respondents were the 1st year cadets specifically from the course of Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation (BSMT) and Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering (BSMarE) at the College of Maritime Education in Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation. One hundred thirty-nine (139) respondents were selected from the 1st year of maritime students that are currently enrolled. Quantitative analysis was used with descriptive design to analyze the responses of the individuals involved. To gather the information that were required in the analysis, the self-derived questionnaire was used. The researcher also used a three (3) part structured type questionnaire. Results show that regardless of the challenges and circumstances that maritime students are facing it did not become a hindrance to their goals and they did not let mental health affect their academic performance. There is also no significant correlation between factors and academic performance among maritime students.
