Analyzing the tourist destinations in Quezon Province based on Butler’s Tourism Life Cycle Theory
Area of Research
Abstract
The tourist industry is dynamic and constantly charging. Therefore, the Butler Model is a way of studying tourist resorts and seeing how they change over time and in relation to the changing demands of the tourist industry. It has 5 stages; Exploration, Involvement, Development, Consolidation and Stagnation stage.
As for the exploration stage, it is where the destination attracts attention, where people are starting to discover its existence. In the involvement stage, local people start to notice that there are increasing numbers of people coming to their local area. In the development stage, big companies start to see the emerging potential of the area as a tourist resort and therefore start to invest money in the region. In the consolidation stage, little of the original natural environment will remain and negative comments about what it used to be, may cause people to find a new destination to discover. Lastly in the stagnation stage, competition from other resorts, rowdiness and a loss of the original features (e.g. if it had a great beach but that is now crowded and full of rubbish) can cause the resort to stop growing.
These studies research the condition of the municipalities in Quezon Province using the Butler’s Tourism Life Cycle Theory. 100 respondents participated in answering the questionnaires. The researchers also conducted an interview with tourism officers in Sariaya, Candelaria and Gumaca. Based on the findings revealed by the study, the researchers came up with recommendations to analyze the condition of the three municipalities in terms of their tourism industry.
