STATUS OF PHYSICAL FACILITIES OF LUCENA CITY JAIL AS PERCEIVED BY INMATES

Abstract
The main objective of this study was to determine the status of physical facilities
of Lucena City Jail according to its availability, adequacy, and common problems that
are encountered by the inmates. This study was conducted in the Lucena City Jail
where in quantitative method of gathering data was used. The facilities were assessed
and evaluated with permission to carry out the gathering of data that were obtained
through the coordination and approval of the jail warden. After making the
questionnaires, the questionnaires were distributed to the inmates to gather accurate
and appropriate data.
Based on the gathered data, the researchers found that one of the major
problems that were perceived and encountered by the inmates was the lack of
adequate cells. This was based on the statement stated on Table 4 which is the “Lack
of cells that meet the number of inmates” is deemed as a serious problem by the
respondents as shown in the results. Based on the perception of the inmate
respondents residing within the Lucena City Jail, the jail cell is the highest ranked facility that needs further improvements which is to add additional cells to meet the ratio
of the increasing numbers of inmates.
