SOCIAL MEDIA: THE ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES TO THE COLLEGE STUDENTS

Abstract
The purpose of this research is to survey the advantages and
disadvantages of social media to the college students. It employed a quantitative
method, a descriptive type of survey research to gather and analyze the necessary
data. The study was conducted in Lucena City and there were a total of 100
respondents who were randomly selected. Frequency and weighted mean were
used as statistical tools for analyzing the data. Analysis of results reveals that
college students frequently used Facebook, Google, and YouTube; and most of
them spent one to five hours online every day. In addition, college students agreed
that social media sites keep them updated from the latest happenings around the
globe. Also, they are all aware of its disadvantages; they agreed that it can also be
an avenue to disturb and ruin someone’s reputation by spreading false information
across social media sites. With these findings, the researchers designed a
program in a form of a leaflet to be endorsed in different chosen college institution in Lucena City. The results of the study provide significant information that can be
used by college students and future researchers.
