CONTRABANDS: ITS CONTROL AND PREVENTION
Area of Research
Abstract
The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) believes that the prisoners should not be punished as the ancient punishment but to change for the better. Since the BJMP are the one responsible for the activities and programs inmates would undergo, they see to it that they live in a normal matter and make sure that there will be no contrabands that will get in the jail. Thus, this study sought to identify the common contrabands confiscated by the jail personnel; determine the level of implementation in terms of (a) control of contrabands, (b) prevention of entries of contrabands, (c) determine the difficulties encountered by the BJMP in preventing and controlling the entrance of contrabands, and (d) identify the implication that can be derived from the findings of the study. This study used the descriptive method to come up with the specific and concrete results. Based from the information gathered from the respondents, the researchers found out that the most common contraband confiscated during visitations are cell phones/mobile phones, MP3, USB, CDs, iPod, and other communicating devices, gambling materials and pens and pencils. The jail personnel of district jails perform an excellent job in the implementation of controlling the entry of contrabands inside the jail facility and there is an excellent performance among the jail personnel of Talipan District Jail in terms of the preventive measures against contrabands.
