FACTORS AFFECTING THE MAINTENANCE OF PEACE AND ORDER IN SELECTED BARANGAYS IN THE PHILIPPINES

Abstract

The study focused on factors affecting maintenance of peace and order in selected barangays in the Philippines. It identified the demographic profile of respondents; current programs implemented for maintenance of peace and order; and factors affecting maintenance of peace and order in terms of personnel, equipment, and environment. Descriptive method of research was used and data were gathered from 100 barangay officials. Researchers utilized a questionnaire and simple random sampling technique. Data were treated with simple percentage and weighted arithmetic mean methods. Most respondents belonged to 51 years old to 60 years old age group, majority were males and barangay tanods, and most were in service for less than 5 years. Anti-illegal drug activities based on BADAC Plan of Action; monitoring of performance of barangay tanods; intensified mobile patrol of barangay tanods; intensified foot patrol of barangay tanods; distribution of emergency kits for barangay tanods; leadership training for barangay officials; and skills enhancement training for barangay officials are current programs highly implemented for maintenance of peace and order. They agreed that small amount of honorarium , poor educational background, and limited number of relevant training are factors affecting maintenance of peace and order in terms of personnel. They agreed that absence of CCTV is a factor affecting maintenance of peace and order in terms of equipment. They moderately agreed that type of patrol system, absence of street lights, lack of police visibility, and lack of cooperation of people are factors affecting maintenance of peace and order in terms of environment.
