The College of Maritime Education of Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation staged a reenactment of Bayanihan on May 13, 2026, at the CME Grounds as part of the university’s observance of National Heritage Month.
The presentation portrayed the traditional Filipino image of neighbors working together to carry a bahay kubo to a new location. The performance highlighted Bayanihan as an enduring symbol of unity, cooperation, compassion and selfless service.
Produced by Capt. Crispino Portes and ENS Romeo Baniana, the activity emphasized the continuing relevance of Bayanihan in contemporary society. Portes noted that the tradition reflects Filipino values such as malasakit, teamwork and collective responsibility, which also hold importance in maritime education.
The presentation connected Bayanihan to the maritime profession, where trust, discipline and cooperation are essential onboard ships and in daily life.
Renz Gabiana served as narrator and guided the audience through the story with clarity and emotion. His narration explained the historical roots and deeper meaning of Bayanihan, helping viewers understand how simple acts of helping one another can strengthen families and communities.
Kennon Roi Ramos portrayed the son, representing the younger generation learning the value of cooperation and solidarity. Through his role, the presentation reminded the audience that cultural traditions endure when young people experience, understand and embrace them.
Joshua Danzel Arot played Isko, the father, whose character symbolized resilience, humility and gratitude. Cassandra Abel portrayed Nena, the mother, embodying the warmth, strength and quiet perseverance of Filipino mothers.
Set against the CME Grounds, the reenactment resonated with students, faculty members and guests. It showed that Bayanihan is not only a memory of the past, but also a timeless value that continues to guide Filipinos in facing challenges through generosity and unity.
Through the activity, the College of Maritime Education demonstrated that heritage is best preserved when students experience it firsthand. The symbolic lifting of the bahay kubo reminded the Envergan community that when people work together with compassion and purpose, no burden is too heavy and no goal is beyond reach.
The activity reflected MSEUF’s commitment to transformative and student-centered education by allowing students to experience Filipino heritage through performance and reflection. It also upheld the core values of Unity, Service, Mindfulness and Fortitude as the presentation celebrated cooperation, compassion and resilience as enduring Filipino values.
