AD12’s “Liyab sa Lihim” Ignites the AEC Little Theater with Truth, Action, and Heart
On May 7, 2024, the AEC Little Theater of Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation blazed with passion, honesty, and social awareness as the Arts and Design 12 (AD12) students presented their original theatrical production, “Liyab sa Lihim.”
Directed by student-artist Alexis Marquez, the play was more than a crime drama—it was a riveting journey of self-discovery and truth-telling. Set against the gritty backdrop of Dante’s Theatre, Liyab sa Lihim follows the secret lives of Liam and Iñigo, janitors-turned-undercover operatives investigating illicit drug activities hidden behind the stage curtains. What starts as a thrilling mission to expose criminal dealings soon evolves into a layered story of identity, fear, and acceptance.
With every scene, the play peeled back layers of secrecy—not just in the criminal case, but in the personal truths of its characters. Liam’s phone conversation with Ronald and Victoria offered a quiet but powerful moment of vulnerability. It unveiled a man torn between duty and self—afraid to acknowledge his true identity in a world that might not understand. This portrayal opened a rare and meaningful conversation about gender identity and self-acceptance, a topic still often left unspoken.
The play’s emotional and psychological depth echoed through every subplot. From Liza’s heartbreak and longing, Dante’s charismatic manipulation, to the silent compromises made by backstage staff—Liyab sa Lihim explored the universal struggle to confront truth, whether it be in society, in relationships, or within oneself.
The cast delivered standout performances that breathed life into the narrative. Neric Rivera gave a magnetic performance as the menacing Dante, while Christian Jay Sanchez lit up the stage with the flair and wit of Madamme. Tricia Caringal’s portrayal of Liza was deeply moving, her solo number becoming one of the show’s emotional high points.
Under the technical direction of Joel Tambiloc, the lighting, music, and effects added layers of drama and rhythm, enhancing the story's impact without overpowering it. Every cue, especially during the pivotal solo scene, was executed with professional finesse.
The production was warmly received by the MSEUF Senior High School community. Among those in attendance were Basic Education Department Principal Fe Bartiana and Assistant Principal Maritoni Regio, who commended the students for their bravery and artistic talent.
As a final requirement for the Arts and Design strand, Liyab sa Lihim was more than a showcase of creative skill—it was a compelling testament to the power of theater as a medium for truth, change, and dialogue. Through bold storytelling and fearless performances, AD12 delivered a message that will stay with its audience: sometimes the brightest flames come from the secrets we choose to confront.
