Completed2017

Abstract

This study aimed to identify the Concept of Happiness Across Gender. Specifically, it sought to determine the profile of the subjects, the emerging concepts of happiness across gender, how happiness differ across gender, and how happiness vary in terms of romantic, family, and friendship relationship. It employed the descriptive research design wherein the interview protocol was used among purposively chosen Lucena City residents. Coding and analysis was used in the analytical framework. Based on the results, the emerging concepts of happiness are being contented in life, to be with family, and to live a stress-free or pressure-free life for males and females while majority of the LGBT considers the society and family’s love, support, acceptance, and respect as their concept of happiness. Moreover, family is the ultimate source of happiness across gender but differs particularly to LGBT if they are not accepted for their sexual orientation and gender identity. Additionally, romantic relationship is a source of happiness across gender but differs when a person experienced mistrust and betrayal. Lastly, friends are a source of happiness across gender but its importance changed depending on the status of the person. Married person consider it least important as compared to those who are single. Recommendations are to the area of Positive Psychology, family of LGBT, society, and to the future researchers, for them to notice the existence of the LGBT and to promote acceptance, respect, and equality towards every gender, and to do further research that will involve all the gender most especially those who are not included in this study. The implication of this study to the positive psychology Positive Psychology attempts to develop psychological interventions that eliminates pathological thoughts and instead foster positive attitudes towards one’s subjective experiences. With the help of this study, the psychologist and researchers in the area of positive psychology may provide psychological interventions for the parents/relatives of the LGBT so that irrational thoughts/beliefs about these phenomena such as unacceptance may be addressed.
