Application of Practiced Skills: Its Importance to the Performance of Maritime Students Onboard

Abstract

Maritime education institutions are considered an important training ground for future seafarers where they should have the resources and practices to deliver quality instruction and relevant services towards efficient and effective implementation of STCW or ILO requirements. This study aimed to determine the factors affecting the application of practiced skills. Descriptive type of research was utilized in the study with 100 Maritime student’s Marine Transportation and Marine Engineering as respondents. The researcher used a three (3) part structured type questionnaire. The first part is to determine the demographic profile of the respondent. The second part is to distinguish the Level of practiced skills to the performance of Maritime Student including Deck Cadet and Engine Cadet and the last part is to utilize the knowledge and Challenges of Maritime Cadets on Board. Results show that in terms of gender, the respondents show that out of 50 Maritime Transportation and 50 Maritime Engineering respondent 92% were males, and only 8% were females. While, in terms of age, the respondent shows that 72% of the maritime cadet respondent’ ages ranged from 21-22 years old while 22% were from 19-20 years old; their age is 23-24 years old and 25 above. The data show that the majority of the respondent is the maritime student.; also, 86% of the respondent are Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation and 14% of the respondent are Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering. The majority of the respondents revealed that performed routine maintenance tasks for unsafe or malfunctioning conditions includes troubleshooting, evaluating, and recommending system upgrades, with the highest percentage that was very important for the respondents, considers that routine maintenance tasks were the manufacturing worked needed to have been protected and secured in the safe hands of the engine department. Among the factor that was taken into consideration in knowledge and challenges of a maritime cadet on board, chose the statement that could've managed, performed the duties and responsibilities on board vessel were very important for the respondents, considers in upholding the obligation and responsibility task assigned by their officer
