Generative Artificial Intelligence AI is a technology that can create various types of content and media, such as text, images, video, audio, and synthetic data. Large Language Models LLMs like ChatGPT and systems like DALL-E have become increasingly popular for their ability to generate text and images, respectively. Other notable examples of Generative AI include Bard and Jasper for text generation, Midjourney and Stability AI for graphics and image generation, Copilot, Ghostwriter, and Tabnine for computer code generation, VALL-E for voice mimicry, and Synthesia for synthetic human video creation.
Generative AI has immense potential to create innovative content, but its inappropriate usage poses a significant risk.
Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation (MSEUF) recognizes the potential of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) to innovate education and research. As such, the University encourages the responsible and ethical use of these technologies by its teaching staff, researchers, students, and support staff.
By using Generative AI in an ethical and responsible manner, MSEUF can harness the power of these technologies to enhance education and research while also staying within the bounds of the laws and academic integrity.
Purpose
This acceptable use policy has been established to ensure that the use of Generative AI at MSEUF follows legal and academic integrity standards. This policy applies to students, teaching staff, researchers, and support staff of MSEUF and outlines guidelines for the appropriate and inappropriate use of these technologies in the pursuit of knowledge and advancement.
The primary objective of this policy is to outline clear ethical and responsible usage guidelines for Generative AI systems, with the goal of preventing the creation and dissemination of false information, as well as any forms of cheating or academic dishonesty that may result from their misuse.
By adhering to this policy, we aim to foster a trustworthy and reliable environment for the development and implementation of Generative AI technologies at MSEUF.
General Guidelines
When using Generative AI, students, teaching staff, researchers, and support staff should follow these guidelines:

Ensure that the AI system is reliable and trustworthy and has been thoroughly tested before implementing it in their work.

Only use the AI system for tasks that are appropriate and ethical and do not engage in any illegal or unethical activities.

Ensure that the AI-generated content is accurate, relevant, and appropriate for the intended audience.

Regularly review and evaluate the AI-generated content to ensure it meets the necessary standards and adjustments.

Be transparent about the use of AI in their work and inform colleagues and stakeholders about how it is being used to support their work.

Ensure that the AI-generated content complies with copyright and other intellectual property laws.

Protect sensitive and confidential information by ensuring that the AI system is secure and only authorized personnel have access to it.

Continue to develop their skills and knowledge in AI and seek support and training from experts in the University as needed.
Acceptable Use of Generative AI by Students
To ensure the responsible use of Generative AI, it is important for students to view this technology as a supplementary tool that can aid and enhance their learning experience, rather than a substitute for their own critical thinking and comprehension skills.
It is essential that students avoid using Generative AI to deceive or misrepresent the entire generated output as their own original work.
Examples of acceptable use of Generative AI for students include, but are not limited to:

Enhancing the learning experience of students by providing them with additional resources and modern learning tools.

Providing personalized tutoring and feedback, and automated grading to improve student’s learning outcomes.

Practicing language skills, writing, and comprehension.

Brainstorming and idea generation for projects and research topics.

Enhancing students’ output writing style and grammar.

Providing immediate feedback on their work and help guide their own understanding.

Generating summaries or explanations of difficult concepts.

Generating questions for self-study or for class discussions.

Inappropriate Use of Generative AI by Students
It is important for students to understand that using Generative AI as a replacement for their own work is not acceptable as it constitutes plagiarism and academic dishonesty.
The misuse of Generative AI by students can be unethical, and includes the following:

Submitting output generated by Generative AI as one’s own work for assignments or class activities.

Generating answers to exam questions with Generative AI without having a grasp of the material.

Using Generative AI or other language models to create an entire essay or research paper without conducting any research or writing of their own.

Generating computer programming code with Generative AI without understanding the underlying concepts and problems.

Generating mathematical problem solutions with Generative AI without understanding the applied mathematical equation and problem.

Creating fake sources or references for an academic paper with the help of Generative AI.

Using Generative AI to manipulate or falsify data, images, voices, or videos with the intention of deceiving or spreading false information.
Sanction for the Inappropriate Use of Generative AI
Any instance of the use of Generative AI by the teaching staff, researchers, students, and support staff to commit academic dishonesty or deceit the University stakeholders or the public will be reported to the appropriate authorities for disciplinary action.
The use of Generative AI for cheating and academic dishonesty by students can have serious consequences for both the student and the University.
Depending on the severity of the violation, potential sanctions for students who use these tools for cheating and academic dishonesty may include:
Verbal or Written Warning and Professional Development
A formal warning may be issued to the student, outlining the violation and the expectation for future conduct. The student may be required to complete additional training or professional development related to academic integrity and the responsible use of Generative AI.
Failure of the Assignment or Exam
In cases where the student used the Generative AI to cheat on an assignment, class activity, or exam, they may receive a failing grade for that assignment, class activity, or exam.
Failure of the Course
In cases of severe violations, the student may fail the course in which the violation occurred.
Suspension or Expulsion
In cases of repeated or severe violations, the student may be suspended or expelled from the University.
Education and Training
Teaching staff, support staff, and students are expected to read and understand this policy before using Generative AI systems.
The University will conduct information dissemination of this policy during teaching staff, support staff, and students’ orientations.
Training and education may be provided by the academic departments as students’ co-curricular activity to ensure that they understand the proper and ethical use of Generative AI systems.
