Enverga University advances sustainability literacy through education and community engagement

SDGSDG 17: Partnership for the Goals

Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation (MSEUF) strengthened sustainability-related education in 2025 through experiential learning, public lectures, and community outreach initiatives that connected academic knowledge with economic empowerment, environmental responsibility, social inclusion, good governance, and cultural preservation.

Through collaborations among its academic departments, government agencies, and community organizations, the University created opportunities for students and community members to explore sustainable development issues and apply knowledge to real-world concerns.

These initiatives reflected MSEUF's commitment to transformative, student-centered, and outcomes-oriented education while supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Strengthening economic sustainability through entrepreneurship education

On Jan. 11, 2025, the College of Business and Accountancy, in collaboration with the Institute of Graduate Studies and Research, Community Relations Department, Department of Social Welfare and Development, and Lucena City local government, conducted Hatid-Kaalaman sa Pagnenegosyo for parents of Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) beneficiaries.

The program introduced participants to entrepreneurship, financial literacy, small-business development, and long-term financial sustainability.

Through practical discussions, beneficiaries explored approaches to managing financial resources, developing livelihood opportunities, and making informed economic decisions.

The initiative demonstrated how academic expertise could support community learning and promote awareness of sustainable livelihood practices.

By sharing entrepreneurial knowledge with disadvantaged families, MSEUF advanced education related to SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 4 (Quality Education), and SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth).

Promoting health and environmental awareness through Indigenous community education

On Oct. 30, 2025, MSEUF partnered with the Department of Social Welfare and Development Field Office IV-A and other government agencies to conduct SAMA-SAYA: Sama-samang Saya Kasama ang Sama-Bajau ng Lucena at the University Gymnasium.

The initiative brought together 153 Sama-Bajau 4Ps beneficiaries from Barangays Dalahican and Barra for educational discussions, cultural engagement, and community services.

College of Arts and Sciences faculty member Pedro Jose De Castro discussed Indigenous Peoples' ways of life, while College of Nursing instructor Rolando Remojo shared information on health, nutrition, personal hygiene, and waste management.

These educational sessions connected sustainable development concepts with everyday community concerns, particularly personal well-being, environmental responsibility, and respect for cultural identity.

The program also provided opportunities for student volunteers to participate in community engagement and observe how academic knowledge contributes to addressing community needs.

By combining educational outreach with cultural inclusion, MSEUF supported SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).

Developing civic awareness and understanding of sustainable institutions

On March 21, 2025, the College of Arts and Sciences Social Science Society organized the public lecture Kapayapaan sa Gitna ng Sigwa: Katarungan, Hamon, at Pagbangon as part of Social Sciences Week.

The event gathered students, faculty members, and members of the public to examine issues concerning justice, human rights, labor rights, representation, public accountability, and civic participation.

Through discussions with legal professionals, civic advocates, and public figures, participants encountered different perspectives on social challenges and the responsibilities of citizens in democratic institutions.

The activity encouraged critical thinking and informed engagement with issues affecting communities and national development.

By integrating discussions of justice, responsible citizenship, and public accountability into an educational forum, MSEUF supported learning related to SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions) and SDG 4 (Quality Education).

The initiative also reflected the University's commitment to preparing socially responsible learners who recognize the importance of inclusive and accountable institutions in sustainable development.

Preserving cultural sustainability through experiential learning

On Sept. 13–14, 2025, MSEUF Catanauan hosted Sayaw Kalilayan, a two-day seminar-workshop celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Kalilayan Folkloric Dance Troupe.

The program welcomed more than 400 student performers and guests from CALABARZON, Bicol, and Metro Manila for educational activities focused on Philippine folk traditions and cultural heritage.

Founder choreographer Rommel Serrano facilitated lectures and practical workshops covering cultural interpretation, traditional dance techniques, costumes, research, and choreography.

Participants explored local cultural traditions through dances such as Abaruray de Catanauan, Malagueña de Catanauan, and Tubong de Catanauan.

Through hands-on learning and cultural discussions, the workshop encouraged participants to deepen their understanding of local traditions and recognize the importance of safeguarding cultural identity for future generations.

The initiative demonstrated how experiential education could support cultural sustainability while developing participants' appreciation of traditional knowledge.

The activity contributed to SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), particularly Target 11.4, which encourages efforts to safeguard cultural heritage.

Advancing sustainability literacy through meaningful educational experiences

Together, these initiatives demonstrated how MSEUF incorporated sustainability-related concepts into educational activities that connected learning with social, economic, environmental, and cultural concerns.

Entrepreneurship education introduced concepts related to economic resilience and sustainable livelihoods. Health and environmental discussions promoted awareness of personal well-being, hygiene, and responsible waste practices. Civic education encouraged an understanding of social justice, inclusive governance, and public accountability, while cultural workshops highlighted the importance of safeguarding local heritage.

These activities provided opportunities for students and community participants to encounter different dimensions of sustainable development through instruction, dialogue, practical activities, and community engagement.

For students, sustainability literacy involves more than recognizing the SDGs. It also requires understanding the relationships among economic, social, environmental, and institutional challenges and applying that understanding to responsible decisions.

MSEUF's documented 2025 initiatives demonstrated the provision of sustainability-related learning opportunities. However, the available program reports did not establish whether the University formally assessed students' sustainability knowledge, evaluated their learning gains, or measured retention of sustainability concepts over time.

Sustaining transformative education toward 2030

MSEUF's 2025 initiatives reflected its threefold function of instruction, research, and community service by connecting academic expertise with community needs and creating educational experiences beyond conventional classroom instruction.

The programs also demonstrated the University's commitment to Mindfulness, Service, Excellence, Unity, and Fortitude through inclusive learning, collaborative engagement, and the promotion of social responsibility.

As Enverga University advances its vision of becoming a globally competitive institution toward 2030, it continues to promote meaningful education that prepares learners to understand contemporary challenges, participate responsibly in their communities, and contribute to sustainable development.

Through its commitment to transformative learning, partnerships, and community engagement, MSEUF supports SDG 4 (Quality Education), particularly Target 4.7 on education for sustainable development, and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), which recognizes collaboration and knowledge-sharing as essential to achieving a sustainable future.
