MSEUF adopts net-zero by 2040 goal backed by audits, renewables

Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation is committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2040, aligning its accounting and reporting with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (Scopes 1, 2, and material Scope 3 categories), and advancing the pledge with a 99.375 kWp grid-tied solar project at the CET Building launched Jan. 23–March 8, 2024, under its Green Initiatives program.

The University framed the commitment around four pillars: (1) rigorous measurement and disclosure following GHG Protocol standards; (2) deep efficiency in buildings and operations; (3) rapid on-site and contracted renewable energy for electricity; and (4) responsible residual emissions management. “The collaborative meeting on Jan. 23 marked not only the start of the project but also the foundation for a strategic partnership to harness clean and renewable energy for the University,” Vice President for Administration Dario Opistan said, underscoring the first-mover investment that will cut Scope 2 emissions and operating costs.

MSEUF will operationalize the target through annual inventories, energy audits, and a phased decarbonization plan that prioritizes load reduction, solar expansion, low-carbon procurement, commuting and fleet improvements, and curriculum-linked “living lab” projects that turn facilities into hands-on learning sites. Facilities and sustainability teams will publish progress each academic year, including updates on renewable share, avoided emissions, and pipeline projects.

The Green Initiatives program will continue to scale projects that deliver near-term reductions, with the CET Building solar installation serving as the template for additional rooftops and performance-contracting opportunities. The roadmap will also set triggers for third-party verification of inventories and for periodic recalibration to reflect grid decarbonization, technology costs, and campus growth.

This feature aligned with MSEUF’s mission and core values of Mindfulness, Excellence, and Fortitude by turning climate stewardship into measurable, time-bound action. It practices outcomes-oriented and student-centered education by making the path to net zero a campuswide, applied-learning effort that benefits the university and the community.
