OSAS holds communications seminar for second-year students
The Office of Student Affairs and Services (OSAS) organized a seminar focused on the importance of effective communication as a core skill for career development, Mar. 26.
Held specifically for second-year college students, the seminar emphasized the need to strengthen communication skills early in preparation for future professional engagements.
Resource speaker Zedric Lorzano discussed the two main channels of communication: verbal and non-verbal.
Lorzano explained how mastery of both enables individuals to foster respectful and productive relationships with supervisors, peers, clients, and stakeholders. “This core competency, when practiced, can support leadership, resolve conflicts, and bridge differences among people of various perspectives,” Lorzano said.
A total of 346 students participated in the activity, which centered on how strong verbal and non-verbal communication can lead to better opportunities in the workplace.
The seminar highlighted how employers value individuals who can build meaningful connections, articulate ideas clearly, and contribute to collaborative environments across various industries.
OSAS Director Joana Fe Panganiban stressed the relevance of face-to-face communication in today's digital world.
"The new generation of learners must come to understand that strong communication supports both academic success and collaboration," Panganiban said.
"We need to learn to interact and connect with others face-to-face, rather than solely relying on social media for human connection." Panganiban added.
The seminar forms part of OSAS’ continuing initiatives to prepare students for life beyond the university through practical skills training and values development.
Director Joana Fe Panganiban emphasized that communication is a key component in professional readiness. "The new generation of learners must come to understand that strong communication supports both academic success and collaboration. We need to learn to interact and connect with others face-to-face, rather than solely relying on social media for human connection," she added.
Zedric Lorzano, the discussant, talked on verbal and non-verbal communications as the two basic mechanisms of conveying information to another. "Being skilled in both allows for a stronger and empathetic relationship with others. In the future, this will help you build stronger connections with your colleagues, supervisors, clients, and stakeholders. This core competency, when practiced, can support strong leadership skills, resolve conflicts, and bridge differences among people of various perspectives."
