Banyuhay Dance Troupe explores spiritual themes in ‘UMBRA’ concert

The Banyuhay Dance Troupe of Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation staged “UMBRA: Beyond the Veil – A Dance Offering to the Unseen” at the University Gymnasium on April 29, 2025, in celebration of International Dance Day.

The concert featured a series of choreographed performances that explored mystical and spiritual themes through movement. Dancers portrayed unseen forces and ancestral stories using a blend of traditional and interpretive dance.

“UMBRA invited the audience to reflect on forces that exist beyond our senses,” said BDT adviser Sir Keyvin Amo. “It was a spiritual and creative exploration rooted in culture and imagination.”

Company members performed original pieces that drew from Filipino folklore, indigenous belief systems, and sacred rituals. The show’s choreography incorporated symbolic gestures, elemental themes, and dramatic lighting to evoke presence beyond the physical.

“For us, it was not just a show—it was a dance ritual,” said dancer Tricia Caringal. “We offered each movement with intention and respect for the unseen.”

Audience members filled the venue and stayed engaged throughout the immersive performance. The concert also included an interactive talkback with choreographers and select dancers, who explained the cultural and spiritual basis of the performance.
