Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation through the Dr. Cesar A. Vilalriba Research and Knowlege Management Institute (DCAVRKMI) and Community Relations Department (CRD) conducted a training-workshop titled “Developing Research-Based Extension Program” at the Library Seminar Hall to strengthen the integration of research and community extension initiatives among faculty and non-teaching personnel, April 10.

The whole-day activity gathered academic leaders, faculty members and staff to enhance their competence in designing extension programs grounded in evidence-based practices.

Maria Cecilia Jalbuena, discipline research coordinator of the College of Arts and Sciences, led the presentation of participants, while Dr. Felix Mercado, dean of DCAVRKMI, presented the rationale and emphasized the importance of aligning extension programs with research to ensure sustainability and relevance.

Dr. Milagrosa Lawas, CRD director, delivered the first session and outlined the University’s extension framework and strategies for implementing community-based initiatives.

Dr. Mercado then facilitated the second session, where he guided participants in developing research-based extension programs, focusing on planning, implementation and evaluation. Participants engaged in workshop activities and drafted their own extension proposals.

“Grounding extension initiatives in research ensures that our programs remain impactful, measurable and responsive to community needs,” Dr. Mercado said.

Jade Oraa served as program manager and coordinated the smooth implementation of the activity.

The workshop concluded with a closing ceremony, with participants expressing appreciation for the practical insights and hands-on experience gained.

The initiative reflected the University’s commitment to Service, Excellence and Fortitude by strengthening research-driven community engagement. It also supported transformative and outcomes-oriented education by aligning instruction, research and extension in addressing societal needs.
