Guidance and Testing Office of the Offce of Student Affairs and Services (OSAS) conducted a six-session psychoeducation program for third-year College of Maritime Education students from Feb. 21 to March 7 to promote mental health awareness and stress management.
The program covered Modules 1 to 6 and was facilitated by guidance counselor Charmaine San Miguel. Modules 1 and 2 were held on Feb. 21, followed by Modules 3 and 4 on Feb. 28, and Modules 5 and 6 on March 7. The sessions focused on understanding mental health, managing stress, and developing effective coping strategies.
Each session began with pre-tests that measured students’ levels of anxiety, stress, and depression. Participants identified academic and personal stressors and shared their experiences, helping them become more aware of their mental and emotional well-being.
Through interactive activities and guided discussions, students learned to reframe negative thoughts, recognize unhealthy behaviors, and explore positive alternatives. These exercises aimed to strengthen resilience, emotional regulation, and peer support.
Students gave positive feedback on the program, describing it as engaging, practical, and helpful. Many reported increased confidence, focus, and motivation, as well as improved ability to manage stress and support one another. Pre- and post-test results showed a slight decrease in anxiety levels, indicating the program’s positive impact on student well-being.
The psychoeducation sessions equipped maritime students with essential skills to face the demands of their academic training and prepare for future shipboard responsibilities with confidence and resilience.
The program reflects the University’s commitment to Mindfulness and Service by prioritizing students’ mental health and emotional well-being. It also demonstrates Excellence and Fortitude as MSEUF equips learners with life skills that support resilience, holistic development, and success in demanding professional fields.
