The Bachelor of Library and Information Science (BLIS) program is the study of the development, deployment, and management of information sources in print, non-print, electronic, and digital formats and services. Students are being prepared to apply information technology to library operations and functions.

Program Educational Objectives

The program prepares students to their unique role in gathering, organizing and coordinating access to the best information sources for the knowledge-based organization they belong, as well as in implementing standards for the ethical and appropriate use of information.

  • Program Outcomes
    • Select, evaluate, organize and disseminate print, multimedia, electronic, and digital information resources;
    • Can effectively communicate orally and in writing, at the same time, use a variety of communication methods in a manner that best enables the message to be understood;
    • Demonstrate logical and systematic approaches to the accomplishment of tasks;
    • Formulate objectives, policies and processes as well as design and manage resources in anticipation of future educational or organizational changes;
    • Recognize, analyze and constructively solve problems, provide appropriate direction and assistance, and overcome barriers when necessary;
    • Identify users’ needs and wants through reference interviews, customer surveys, compliant logs and other means in order to evaluate the effectiveness of current services and improve these and other practices;
    • Work well in groups and seek ways to build team efforts to solve problems and achieve common goals;
    • Understand library’s automation systems and the use of computer hardware, software and peripherals, including online collaboration tools (the Internet, the worldwide web, and social networking sites;

    • Evaluate and debate information policy and ethical issues applicable in local, national or global context; and
    • Participate in continuing education activities organized by library associations and other entities.

  • Career Opportunities

    Entry level:

    • Library Assistant: Assist patrons in finding and checking out materials. Perform basic cataloging and shelving duties.
    • Information Specialist: Provide assistance in retrieving information from databases or reference materials. Assist with basic research inquiries.
    • Archives Assistant: Work in archival settings to organize and maintain historical records. Assist in cataloging and preserving archival materials.

    Mid-Level:

    • Librarian: Manage library resources, including acquisitions, cataloging, and circulation. Assist patrons with research and reference inquiries.
    • Information Services Manager: Oversee information services and resources within a library or information center. Coordinate staff and ensure efficient service delivery.
    • Digital Asset Manager: Manage and organize digital collections, including images, documents, and multimedia. Implement strategies for digital preservation.

    Senior Level:

    • Senior Librarian: Take on a leadership role in library operations and services. Coordinate collection development and manage specialized collections.
    • Director of Library Services: Oversee the entire library or information center. Develop strategic plans, manage budgets, and ensure effective operations.
    • Information Architect: Design and implement information systems and structures. Ensure information accessibility and usability.

    Managerial/Executive Level:

    • Chief Information Officer (CIO): Lead the organization's information technology strategy. Oversee the implementation of information systems.
    • Library Director: Head the library or information center. Develop and implement policies, oversee staff, and manage budgets.
    • Chief Knowledge Officer (CKO): Lead the organization's knowledge management initiatives. Develop strategies for information and knowledge sharing.
