IPOPHL patent drafting workshop empowers Envergan innovators towards IP protection, commercialization
To strengthen their knowledge and capacity in protecting intellectual property through patents, utility models, and industrial designs, faculty members, researchers, and innovators from Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation (MSEUF) participated in the IPOPHL Patent Drafting Workshop, July 16.
Dindo Dumali, an expert speaker from the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) led the first two days of the workshop.
Dumali provided in-depth discussions on the Philippine IP system, its various functions, and the roles of different IP instruments. Participants learned how to draft claims effectively, understand the patent application process, and respond to examiners’ actions.
Dumali's engaging and interactive approach included hands-on exercises, where participants drafted their own patent documents based on technologies they conceptualized during the session.
On the third day, Leidy Gatuz, also from IPOPHL, took over the session, where participants presented the technologies they developed during the workshop and received insightful feedback on their drafted claims.
Gatuz emphasized the importance of commercializing intellectual property and introduced participants to strategies for bringing innovations to the market.
Participants also took part in a simulated licensing activity, acting as licensors and licensees to experience real-world negotiations, highlighting how to protect one’s creations while fostering innovation through partnerships.
Originally scheduled as an onsite workshop, the third day transitioned into a virtual format due to the inclement weather.
Despite this unexpected change, participants remained highly engaged, demonstrating the university community’s resilience and strong commitment to intellectual property protection and innovation.
This three-day workshop marks another milestone in MSEUF’s continuous efforts to cultivate a culture of innovation and empower its researchers to transform ideas into tangible, protected, and potentially commercialized outputs. The university expresses its gratitude to IPOPHL and its expert facilitators for their invaluable support and collaboration.
