Nursing students enhance emergency response skills in EUSNA workshop

Enverga University Student Nurses Association

The Enverga University Student Nurses Association conducted a two-day First Aid and Basic Life Support seminar and workshop at the Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation main campus to strengthen nursing students’ readiness for medical emergencies.

The activity was facilitated by Richard M. Escritor, MSN, RN, who served as instructor and guest speaker. The program aimed to equip students with essential knowledge and hands-on skills needed for immediate care and emergency response.

The first day focused on first aid fundamentals, including objectives, the roles and responsibilities of first aid providers, emergency action principles, legal considerations, scene safety, and infectious disease prevention. Participants then joined supervised practical sessions on lifting, moving, and transferring victims.

The second day emphasized applied skills training. Students practiced the proper use of triangular bandages for wounds, burns, and fractures, followed by return demonstrations. A major component covered cardiopulmonary resuscitation for adults and infants, with hands-on practice in chest compressions and rescue breathing after instructor demonstrations.

Additional sessions covered systematic patient assessment using DCAP-BTLS, ABC, and SAMPLE methods, as well as the Heimlich maneuver for adults and infants. The workshop concluded with hands-on practice in proper victim transfer using a spine board with spider straps, highlighting teamwork and patient safety.

Organizers said the seminar enhanced students’ knowledge, confidence, and practical skills in emergency response. Nursing students benefited directly from the training, while EUSNA officers and members also strengthened leadership, teamwork, and organizational skills. The broader university community stands to benefit from students better prepared to assist during emergencies on and off campus.

The activity reflects the University’s commitment to Excellence and Service by developing competent, safety-conscious future health professionals. It also demonstrates Mindfulness, Unity, and Fortitude as students collaborate in high-stakes skills training that prioritizes patient welfare and community readiness.
