El Turismo Society advances inclusive education through FSL training

El Turismo Society

The El Turismo Society conducted “A Quiet Place Year 2: A Filipino Sign Language Training” on March 28 at the College of International Hospitality and Tourism Management Department SR 3 and 4 to equip students with basic and conversational Filipino Sign Language skills.

The training aimed to support the University’s Special Educational Program by providing hands-on instruction that prepares students to communicate effectively with individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing. The program opened with registration and an opening ceremony, followed by remarks from Maricel Herrera, who emphasized the importance of inclusion in tourism and education.

Trainers Christine Joy Onate and Sharon Panaligan facilitated sessions on fundamental and conversational Filipino Sign Language through interactive activities. Participants then engaged in group role plays focused on emergency communication scenarios, allowing students to apply their learning in practical contexts. Herrera said learning sign language enables future tourism professionals to serve all clients with dignity and respect.

Participants demonstrated improved communication skills, teamwork, and confidence during the activities, earning positive feedback from the trainers and organizers. The program concluded with the awarding of certificates to the trainers, recognition of partner collaboration led by Derick Balbarosa, and closing activities facilitated by Blessie Reign Parraba, including evaluations and reflections on inclusive service.

The activity reflects Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation’s commitment to Service, Excellence, and Unity by translating classroom learning into inclusive, community-oriented action. It embodies the University’s educational philosophy of learning by doing and student-centered education, while fostering empathy, social awareness, and professional readiness among students.
