CAS Social Sciences Society Marks Martial Law Anniversary with Forum on Media and Economy
The CAS Social Sciences Society of Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation held its annual commemoration of the declaration of Martial Law on Sept. 30, 2025, at the St. Bonaventure Student Center, engaging students in critical discussions on history, democracy, and social responsibility.
Titled “Alaala at Aral: Lente ng Midya at Ekonomiya sa Panahon ng Batas Militar,” the event aimed to revisit the realities of the Martial Law era and examine its lasting impact on Philippine society. The commemoration featured a panel discussion that allowed participants to reflect on issues of injustice, oppression, and inequality experienced during the period.
Organizers said the activity sought to inspire the youth, particularly student leaders, to remain vigilant in defending democracy and advocating for the rights of future generations. Through open dialogue and interaction with guest speakers, attendees gained deeper insights into how media and economic conditions shaped public life during Martial Law.
Students from various programs under the College of Arts and Sciences—including Political Science, Public Administration, AB English, BS Economics, and Psychology—participated in the event. Organizers noted that the discussions encouraged critical thinking and historical awareness among first- to fourth-year students.
The commemoration concluded with a renewed call for students to remember the country’s past and apply its lessons to contemporary issues, emphasizing the importance of patriotism, democratic values, and civic engagement.
The activity supports the University’s mission of holistic and student-centered education by promoting historical consciousness, critical inquiry, and civic responsibility. It reflects the core values of Mindfulness through remembrance and reflection, Excellence by fostering informed discourse, Unity through shared learning across disciplines, and Service by encouraging students to uphold democratic ideals for the common good.
