AN ELECTRONIC WATER QUALITY MONITORING SYSTEM WITH SHORT MESSAGE SERVICE NOTIFICATION FOR SHRIMP FARMING

Completed2018

Abstract

Nowadays, there are many studies regarding water quality monitoring systems that were developed for different purposes. But the shrimp farms in the Philippines do not have and does not use that kind of system for this purpose. The Philippines is the second largest archipelagic country in the world and most of the people’s living is from the aquaculture, seas and coastal areas. Water quality is the most essential part in shrimp farming as the shrimp is sensitive to the change in temperature, pH and dissolved oxygen. In order to maintain the water quality of shrimp farms, the researchers designed an electronic water quality monitoring system for shrimp farming. This works as one of the objectives of the study. Furthermore, this study aims to design a circuit for electronic water quality system with SMS notification for shrimp farming fabricate a prototype of it. Also, it aims to evaluate its effectiveness and functionality. Research and Development methodology was used in the process of this study. In this method the researchers surveyed, interviewed and analyzed researches in relation to this study. As a result the result of the research, the majority of the respondents agreed that an electronic water quality system with GSM notification for shrimp farming is helpful for the shrimp farmers. Also, the majority of the respondents agreed that having this technology is convenient and will prevent shrimp kills. The objectives of the study have been satisfied. As a result, the researches fabricated a system consisting of Arduino microcontroller, three sensors, GSM module, LCD display screen and aerator. The water quality data is read through the water quality testing sensors and send to the microcontroller. The data is then analyzed by the microcontroller and the result is displayed on the LCD screen. When an abnormal water quality parameter is detected by any sensor the status is sent to the farmer’s mobile phone in the form of SMS. At the same time the aerator will automatically turn on to maintain the parameters. In applying this system the farmers will be able to prolong the life of the shrimps and increase production and income.
