Status of Locals and Fishery Resource in Tayabas Bay: An Input to Integrated Coastal Management

Completed-

Abstract

This study focused on determining the conditions of the locals and fishery resources of selected coastal communities in Tayabas Bay. It employed the descriptive type and used surveys and an interview guide that gave insight to the demographic characteristics and fishing activities of the respondents. The study was conducted in Brgy. Castañas in Sariaya, Brgy. Ibabang Pulo in Pagbilao, and Brgy. Punta in Padre Burgos, Quezon, and consisted of local residents from the selected locale. There were a total of 100 selected non-fishermen respondents and 10 fishermen who are both residents to their respective locale. Percentage and catch per unit effort (CPUE) were used in the statistical analysis of the data. Analysis of the results reveals that most of the residents are mostly dependent on fishing and agricultural work, but with no visible development brought in the community whatsoever. It also shows that the local fishermen are aware of the current situation in the coastal areas that affect their fishing, suggesting assistance and organization with the local government and other fishermen. The study confirms that the biggest contributing factor affecting the state of coastal communities and resources are imposed by human activities such as the presence of illegal fishing practices and commercial fishing boats. By integrating local sectors with the coastal communities, the concerns of the social and environmental aspects will be met to align with the integration of the land and water elements of the coastal zone. By addressing these issues, an input towards implementing an integrated coastal management could take place.
