Implications of Frequent Parental Quarrel to High School Students

Abstract

This study focuses on the effects of parental quarrel on adolescents’ behavior, social adjustment, parental attachment and attitude towards school of the adolescents, it also examined their perceptions and coping mechanisms. It employed the descriptive research design wherein survey and case studies were used. The study was conducted in Lucena City and Pagbilao, Quezon, specifically Quezon National High School, Lucena Dalahican National High School, and Talipan National High School. There were total respondents of 64 who were purposively selected. Frequency, and weighted mean were used in the statistical analysis while thematic analysis was used for the analytical framework. Analysis of the results reveals that maladjustments of the adolescents were strongly associated to parental quarrel, particularly in their behavior, social adjustments, parental attachment and school attitude. Specifically, adolescents develop aggressive behavior, social withdrawal, negative relationship with parents and poor academic performance. Findings also reveals that they perceive it negatively and they also use different kind of coping strategies especially avoidance coping strategy and emotion-focus coping strategy. The findings suggest that there is a significant influence of parental quarrel to adolescents’ maladjustments.
