Effects of Health Problems On-board as Perceived by the Seafarers

Abstract

The study focused on identifying the effects of health problems on-board to cadet seafarers. It aimed at (1) investigating the common health-related problems of the seafarer; (2) identifying the possible effects on the health of the seafarer; and (3) establishing awareness of the importance of having physical activities on-board. The researchers made use of the quantitative type of research to understand the main problem of the study. Through the use of a survey questionnaire and guide questions, the researchers were able to gather information from the respondents who are seafarers. As a result of the study, the researchers found out that Smoking, a high-fat diet, and insufficient physical activity can be a reason for cardiovascular disease as well as huge operating power tools that create strong sounds can be a reason for deafness. The respondents agree that in terms of possible effects of work on the health of seafarers, overwork can drain them physically and/or mentally as fatigue can result in mental or physical illness. In terms of awareness on the importance of having physical activities on-bard. The majority of the respondents strongly agreed that it is a vital need for all seafarers on board.
