Strengthening technical competencies for academic and professional geospatial applications, the Geodetic Engineers of the Philippines – Quezon Student Chapter conducted a Geographic Information Systems training activity for 70 officers and members on Sept. 18 at EMRC 2-Extension and CET 213 of Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation.
The daylong activity introduced participants to the fundamentals of Geographic Information Systems, or GIS, and the practical use of QGIS for managing, analyzing and visualizing spatial data.
Through discussions and demonstrations, participants learned about GIS data formats and layers, vector and raster data, coordinate reference systems, digitizing, geoprocessing and spatial analysis. The training also introduced the basic QGIS interface and tools used in preparing map layouts.
The resource speaker demonstrated how QGIS can be used to work with spatial information, allowing participants to connect fundamental GIS concepts with practical applications in geodetic engineering and related fields.
The activity also broadened participants’ understanding of how GIS supports surveying, mapping, land administration, urban planning and environmental management.
Through the training, GEP-QSC provided its members with an opportunity to strengthen technical knowledge and develop competencies that can support their academic work and future professional practice.
The activity supported Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation’s learning-by-doing and outcomes-oriented educational approaches by exposing students to practical geospatial tools and applications relevant to their discipline. It also reflected the core values of Excellence and Fortitude through continuous technical skills development and preparation for professional practice.
- SDG 4: Quality Education — The training provided practical learning in GIS, spatial analysis and digital mapping that complements students’ geodetic engineering education.
- SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure — Building competencies in geospatial technologies supports innovation and technical capacity in surveying, mapping and infrastructure-related applications.
- SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities — GIS skills can support applications in land administration and urban planning, which contribute to informed and sustainable community development.
