Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
English
The Doctor of Philosophy in English prepares educators, researchers and academic leaders to advance English studies through research and practice. Effective School Year 2026–2027, the 48-unit curriculum covers language and linguistics, intercultural communication, scholarly publishing, digital humanities and emerging technologies. Students complete advanced coursework and a practice-based dissertation, building the expertise to contribute new knowledge and lead in English language education.
Program Educational Objectives
Three to five years after graduation, graduates of the PhD in English shall:

- Demonstrate advanced and comprehensive knowledge of theories, concepts, methodologies, and emerging developments in English studies and critically evaluate their relevance to contemporary linguistic, literary, educational, cultural, and communicative contexts.
- Critically analyze, synthesize, and evaluate complex and emerging issues in English studies, integrating perspectives across disciplines, languages, cultures, and knowledge systems to develop innovative and context-responsive insights.
- Design and conduct independent, rigorous, ethical, and original research that contributes new knowledge or significant insights to English studies and addresses relevant local, national, or global concerns.
- Communicate complex scholarly ideas and research findings effectively and persuasively through advanced academic, professional, and digital modes, including scholarly publications, presentations, and other knowledge-sharing platforms.
- Apply advanced expertise in English studies to lead, innovate, and contribute to transformative practices in education, research, policy, culture, communication, and other professional or community contexts.
