Promoting historical awareness and critical reflection, the CAS Social Sciences Society of Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation conducted “Hinagunam: Paglingon sa Kahapon, Pag-unawa sa Ngayon” on Sept. 23 at the AEC Little Theater, featuring a viewing and discussion of the film Liway.

Directed by Kip Oebanda, Liway follows a young boy living with his detained parents in a military camp near the end of the Martial Law period and is based on a true story, according to Cinemalaya. Through the screening, the organization sought to help students examine the experiences of Filipino families during Martial Law, preserve historical memory and consider how lessons from the period remain relevant to contemporary Philippine society.

CAS Social Sciences Society advisers Dexter Hermidilla and Gervie Cioco joined the activity, along with CAS professor Cresencio Jaballa. Organization members Tiara Gabrielle Estipona and Dior Martin Orig served as reactors, providing perspectives intended to encourage further reflection among participants after the viewing.

The activity received support from the Natural Sciences Society, Honor Society of the Lambda Kappa Phi, PICE-MSEUF Student Chapter, Council of English Enthusiasts, KAMFILAN, MSEUF DOST Scholars’ Guild, PIIE-MSEUF Student Chapter and MSEUF Communication Society. Partner organizations contributed through creative, financial, technical and promotional assistance, manpower and audience mobilization.

Preparations for “Hinagunam” began in July and included coordination with partner organizations and arrangements for the film screening. Organizers moved the activity from its initially planned Sept. 30 schedule to Sept. 23 because of its conflict with the opening of Intramurals 2026.

Through the activity, the CAS Social Sciences Society encouraged students to approach history with critical inquiry, engage with accounts of the past and participate thoughtfully in conversations about their significance to society today.

The activity supported MSEUF’s commitment to transformative and student-centered learning by providing students with an opportunity to examine historical experiences through film, discussion and reflection. It also reflected the core values of Mindfulness and Unity by encouraging thoughtful engagement with history and collaboration among student organizations.
