College of Arts and Sciences

The College of Arts and Sciences offers a number of programs which include major in biology, communication, economics, English, environmental science, political science, psychology and public administration.

The CAS has made tremendous strides from its humble beginnings in 1947. Its faculty, more than 80% of whom have either master's or doctorate degree, and excellence-driven students are considered community resources and are frequently called upon to assist in community-based activities. It has an active research program that shares the college's expertise in many areas. In fact, it has institutionalized the MSEUF Research Forum which has been emulated by the other colleges. Other relevant activities such as the English Fest, Buwan ng Wika, Arts Month, Literature Festival, Social Science Week, Science Week, and Psychological Fair also continues to nurture the gift of students in various fields.

Its mission of being at the forefront of liberal education and the nurture of the arts and the humanities in this part of the country equips the students with the necessary skills to respond to the challenges of the environment.

The College continues with the vision of promoting educational innovations through an aggressive faculty and student development program, strong research orientation, and relevant community extension activities.

The MSEUF College of Arts and Sciences shall produce competent professional adequately prepared in the practice of their profession supportive of national development goals and standards of global excellence.

Vision

In 2030, the College of Arts and Sciences shall be a globally competitive liberal arts and science institution with high concentrations of talent, excellent teaching environment, rigorous program quality, sufficient resources, and a culture of collaboration.

Quality Objectives

  1. To deliver quality instruction as evidenced by a rating of at least 3.5 in a scale of 1-5 in the faculty evaluation for five years.
  2. To assess the impact of outcomes-based education as shown by a GPA of at least 2.5 by 60% of the students for five years
  3. To produce at least one research output per faculty every two years.
  4. To obtain at least a rating of 3.5 on the impact rating in community extension activities every year for a period of five years.
  5. To graduate 50% of the total number of freshman entrants every year for five years.
  6. To increase enrolment by 5% every year for five years.
  7. To achieve customer satisfaction rating higher than 3.5 in a scale of 1-5 every year for five years.

Program Educational Objectives

  1. Graduates shall have effective communication and teamwork skills, creativity and critical thinking.
  2. Graduates shall have skills and capacities to apply theories in various disciplines in accordance with high standards of ethics.
  3. Graduates shall become successful professionals serving local and international communities.
  4. Graduates shall have lifelong skills to facilitate changes in themselves and in their society.

LIBERAL ARTS PROGRAMS

Bachelor of Arts in Communication (new)

The course equips students with the knowledge, skills and values necessary in journalism, advertising, film and television production, education, social work, film and social service where communication skills are needed.

Students undergo practicum training on radio, television, and print where they learn practical skills, among others, to think critically for themselves, and to seek out the hidden meaning in information. They are also trained to help enlighten public opinion on contemporary issues.


Bachelor of Arts in English Language

This course trains students to be competent in the multidisciplinary arena of English language communication. The career opportunities available for the graduates of the program are in advertising, journalism, film and television production, politics, human resource, textbook production, and similar careers where an understanding of communication is critical.

Students are trained to express themselves in written and oral English to transform individuals capable of articulating and interpreting thoughts, processes and events.


Bachelor of Arts in Political Science

The course gives the students a chance to study human interrelationships from the point of view of individual interactions and that of the international, political and economic spheres. Students can expect to gain employment in local governments, government, nongovernment and peoples' organizations, international agencies, academic and research organizations, and social welfare agencies.


Bachelor of Science in Biology

This is designed to prepare students for work in research, the academe, and the biomedical and pharmaceutical industries.

The course requires the individual to be more inquiring and critical to meet the challenges of a dynamically changing environment and prepares graduates for employment in the biomedical, research and manufacturing, and pharmaceutical and health services industries.


Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science

The growing threat of environmental disaster was the motivation behind the offering of this course. The students are taught how to appreciate the importance of sound environmental programs through courses in environmental science and statistics, water and water pollution, environmental ecology, computer modeling and simulation, environmental impact assessment, environmental health and safety, environmental policy and law.

Students are required to conduct independent research relevant to their discipline that they will report and defend before a panel of experts to prepare them for careers in community planning, research and consultancy, government service, and industry.


Bachelor of Science in Economics

The course provides excellent preparation for careers in business, private entrepreneurship, corporate finance, research, marketing, banking and finance and human resources management.


Bachelor of Science in Psychology

The course prepares the student for the study of individual and group behavior and mental processes. This includes such courses as human development, personality, experimental psychology, social psychology, psychological testing, abnormal and clinical psychology, learning and cognition, group dynamics, Filipino psychology, industrial psychology, physiological psychology, statistics (with computer application), and current issues.


Bachelor of Science in Public Administration

A course in public administration prepares the students for a career in the public service. This trains students in the in-depth study of administrative thought and institutions, management of organizations, office and systems management, public fiscal administration, public policy and program administration, policy analysis, public accounting and budgeting, administrative law, techniques in personnel management, program and project development, local government and regional administration, politics and administration and ethics and accountability in the public service.

Students are encouraged to take a hard look at the theories of servant leadership even as they are trained to focus on ethics and accountability in the public service for a career in the public service, research and human resources planning.
